Mk43 Iron Man Suit

Marvel Incredible Cross-Sections has finally been released!
The Incredible Cross-Sections series of books has been one of the biggest design inspirations in my life, ever since I picked up my first one (Castles) around age six and this project has been the greatest honor of my career so far. Not only did I get to work with a fantastically talented team, including some uber-talented illustrators and the fantastic team at DK, but I also had the responsibility of bringing Marvel machines to life in this way for the very first time.
Three months in early 2008 change Tony Stark’s life forever. The billionaire genius inventor has been the CEO of Stark Industries for a decade and a half when he is captured by an armed group in Afghanistan. Told to build his deadliest missile for his captors, he instead uses the materials to create a weaponized suit of armor. After escaping, he vows to fight the evil that Stark Industries’ weapons have been used to empower. He redesigns the suit and becomes the super-powered Iron Man. During his time as Iron Man, Stark never stops upgrading and reimagining his armor, building over forty versions before turning to nanotech to provide an infinitely customizable solution.
I was honoured to be asked to illustrate an Iron Man suit for the new Marevel Studios book. I decided to pick the Mk43, the last fully mechanical suit before the nanotechnology was introduced. I learnt so much working on this piece and very thankful to the team at DK for trusting me with something so iconic.
